| ABOUT THE AUTHORS
Louis Flancbaum,
M.D. is a general surgeon and nationally recognized authority
in bariatric surgery. He is a Chief of the Division of Bariatric
Surgery at St. Luke's - Roosevelt Hospital Center and associate
professor of clinical surgery at the College of Physicians and
Surgeons of Columbia University. Dr. Flancbaum is a graduate of
the State University of New York - Downstate Medical Center and
completed his surgical training at the University of Illinois
Medical Center in Chicago and the Maryland Institute for Emergency
Medical Services Systems in Baltimore. He has held faculty positions
at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey-Robert
Wood Johnson Medical School, Rutgers University and The Ohio State
University College of Medicine. Board Certified in General Surgery,
Surgical Critical Care, and Nutrition Support. Dr Flancbaum is
a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), the American
College of Critical Care Medicine (FCCM), and the American College
of Chest Physicians (FCCP) and has been elected to membership
in over 25 professional societies, including the American Society
for Bariatric Surgery, American Society of Clinical Nutrition,
American Institute of Nutrition, Society for Surgery of the Alimentary
Tract, International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity, and
the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons.
Dr Flancbaum has made numerous national and international presentations
and has published over 100 articles and book chapters in scientific
journals. Dr. Flancbaum lives in Teaneck, New Jersey.
Erica Manfred is a freelance writer and medical journalist
whose articles on a variety of medical and psychological topics
have appeared in Cosmopolitan; Ladies Home Journal; McCalls; Parenting;
Food and Fitness Advisor; Bottom Line/Personal; New Age Journal;
Mothers Today; Dr. Joyce Brothers Emotional Health Newsletter;
Healthgate.com; Onebody.com. She had gastric bypass surgery in
January of 1998, which substantially improved both her health
and quality of life. She lives in Catskill, New York.
Deborah Biskin Flancbaum, M.S. is an educator and freelance
writer who contributes to Lifestyles, Modern Bride, and Olam magazines
and Generationj.com. Her first book, Acts of Loving-Kindness (Jewish
Publication Society) will be out in April of 2002. Ms. Levine
edited Dr. Flancbaum's book, And You Shall Live by Them; Contemporary
Approaches to Jewish Medical Ethics and profiled him for Lifestyles
Magazine. She and Dr. Flancbaum are currently collaborating on
a book about the meaning of the Jewish holidays. She lives with
her husband Louis Flancbaum in Teaneck, New Jersey
